Alternative Wedding Dresses in Ireland: A Guide
Alternative bridal means a wedding look that starts with you, not with a traditional gown. It can be a coloured dress, a black dress, bridal trousers, a jumpsuit, a short dress for the registry office, separates you build yourself, a statement cape, or a gown that looks nothing like what you'd find in a standard bridal shop. Mizz Rio has been designing alternative bridal in Dublin since 2015. This guide answers the questions brides ask us most.
What counts as an alternative wedding dress?
Anything that feels like you rather than what's expected. Our brides choose:
- Colour: blush, ombré, sequins, colour-pop details or a full coloured gown.
- Black: black and dark bridal looks, worn head to toe or as a detail.
- Trousers and jumpsuits: tailored, fluid or embellished, styled to look unmistakably bridal.
- Separates: tops, skirts, overlays and trousers you combine into one look, and can often wear again.
- Short and mini: for city weddings, civil ceremonies and the second outfit of the night.
- Statement layers: capes, sculptural sleeves, sheer overlays and detachable pieces that change the look through the day.
- Floral: 3D flowers, embroidery and wildflower detail.
See them on real brides in our Real Brides gallery, or browse the alternative collection.
What should I wear to a registry office or civil ceremony?
There's no dress code for a civil ceremony in Ireland, so you can wear exactly what suits the day. City and registry office weddings suit shorter dresses, bridal suits, trousers and jumpsuits, which feel polished in a smaller room and easy to move in from ceremony to dinner. See the registry office and civil ceremony edit.
Can I wear trousers or a jumpsuit as a bride?
Yes. Bridal trousers and jumpsuits are a signature part of Mizz Rio's collections. The difference between bridal and corporate is in the fabric, the cut and the styling: a structured shoulder, a sheer overlay, a cape or an embellished top. Browse bridal jumpsuits and separates.
What are bridal separates?
Separates are individual bridal pieces (a top, a skirt, trousers, an overlay, a jacket or detachable sleeves) that you put together into one look. You can change your look between the ceremony and the party, and wear pieces again after the wedding. Our Elements collection is designed exactly this way.
How much does an alternative or bespoke wedding dress cost in Ireland?
At Mizz Rio, bridal designs start from €2,000. Most full looks sit in the €2,500–€6,000+ range, depending on construction, fabric and detail. Mags will talk you through realistic options at your consultation.
What's the difference between original, customised and bespoke?
You can choose a Mizz Rio Original as designed, customise an existing design (changing the neckline, sleeves, length or colour, for example), or develop a fully bespoke look with Mags from the first sketch. Your consultation is where you decide which route suits your vision, your timeline and your budget.
How far in advance should I start?
We recommend starting 10–12 months before your wedding. Shorter timelines are sometimes possible depending on your design and our production schedule. If your date is close, email hello@mizzrio.ie and we'll tell you what's achievable.
What sizes do you design for?
Every body. Every piece is made to your measurements.
I'm not in Dublin. Can I still work with Mizz Rio?
Yes. Mags offers design consultations by Zoom, and finished pieces can be couriered to you. Email hello@mizzrio.ie to arrange a video consultation.
Where can I find alternative wedding dresses in Ireland?
